There is this paradoxical idea that people often t There is this paradoxical idea that people often talk about, how searching for something might lead to not finding it, and that you’ll only find it once you stop looking for it. I’ve taken a stroll with the brilliant @alialmasri in search of beautiful Arabic Calligraphy in Amman, Ali took me to the well-known Barbershop (AlBoury) — the sign was scripted by the Calligrapher Abed Joukhi. It’s mesmerizing! This was my first time entering a barbershop honestly, I’ve been told by a friend that informal public spaces are the best places for intimate conversations, like a barbershop. I’ve sat down with the older generations, they’ve told me when King Hussein came to get a fresh cut here! I’ve been asked where I’m from - Safad - they’ve told me more about the place I come from more than my family did. They’ve shared stories that I believe were quite valuable about the lands we occupy. It was a very nice session, I believe a barbershop is more than just a place to get a cut, it’s a place where people can discuss vulnerable issues, catching up on the politics, the pressing issues, probably some wisdom sessions, almost like a homeboy club. I don’t know if I can say the same about Women’s salons, the dynamic is definitely different there and might need another post to be navigated. But for this one, it would be worth saying that I learnt a thing or two about barbershops and enjoyed being in one, in a way I did not before. Thank you @talaalhaj_ for designing this beautiful post.
does it hurt you? does it ache? is it a place? is does it hurt you? does it ache? is it a place? is it a person? an adventure? personally, the past two years have been an enormous philosophical investigation into intimacy, closeness, longing and proximity. I’ve been asked by a friend a while ago to describe the most intense feeling, she told me for her it’s “anger” and I kept thinking about her question a lot, and I thought, my answer would be “longing” — it’s beautiful yet intense, it can work for you and against you, it can drown you and drive you, all at once. why could it be shameful sometimes? unspeakable? frightening? this yearning for human intimacy, or the longing for a home you never knew, or maybe longing for a disrupted life adventure. This “unreachable experience” and “beautiful void” could be one of the most intense feelings for me. I’ve been inspired by many to create this photo series to try and paint that feeling. The technical aspect of it / we often end up with long shutter shots by mistake, but having the light drag after the subject here is of importance to the portrayal of that feeling to me. 📸 Thank you @talaalhaj_ for blessing my camera, @darkroomamman @grainsandsuch for developing and scanning my film rolls.

I feel like the most exciting part about life is decay, the fact that it’s not going to last, that it might be the only life I’ll ever live this way. The intertwining parts between physical and mental, is interesting. I can’t guarantee I’ll ever see my grandmother holding a cigarette like this in any other time or place, the pigeons she feeds at her window, the mattress laid in the sun, my bird’s tiny feet, will I ever see these details in the same manner in any other life but this? 

I’ve loaded the film on my camera and tried to intentionally capture the details I love the most, I feel like there’s a certain type of intimacy with B&W films that is quite unmatched.
